Get a warrior henchie and have him help you out. It shouldn't be too hard.

Do missions, stick with healing for now. And either get henchies, or join parties. I recommend making friends as a monk, so you can get a regular party of people up.
And you'll get invites to teams all the time, as a monk.
IF you want to go toe-to-toe as a monk/warrior, grab few swordskills, couple of enchantments (Mending, Live Vicariously), Orison, Healing Breeze and possibly some tactics-skills(stances etc. Bonettis is excellent). Invest in in sword, tactics, divine and healing. You can survive on the frontlines, and you can toss a heal from time to time too.

Focus on Divine Favor, Smite and Healing. You will need smite skills to beat your mirror in the end. Monks can be very effectly killers.

i'm a monk/ranger. And I started with an amazing purple bow... which my higher level elementalist found and why I decided to do that ranger build as the 2nd class.
So i predominately heal my henchies and allies and occassionally take a shot when time and situation permits.
But the bow allowed me to dish out enuff damage early on to let me breeze thru up to 12th pretty quick. After that, it wass more of an effort of finding good groups to do missions/quests with. but I'm having a blast with him, he is by far my favorite of all 4 characters that I'm running.
And he has surpassed my first character, teh Elementalist, now.

Or Zealot's Fire and things that like to mob you. Just stand around healing yourself until they die. (Some defensive skills so that you don't die first might or might not be required, depending on their numbers and damage output.)

Monks are one of the easiest profession to play in PvE since you're an extra healer on top of the stupid healer henchie. As a lowbie in ascalon, I was able to do many quests and missions without someone else that way. Monks can't do too much spike damage like other professions, so you have to choose the right skills for different types monsters. Here's some locations that I got a lot of experience from:
Undeads: Gates of Kryta, Seaboard, Sanctum Cay and the Undead quest in Bettletun will help lowbies to level up really quick. I repeated the prior two just to get higher experience.
The explorable area outside Divinity Coast is also a pretty good place to get more experience. The mobs are level 17 ancient treeants (forgot the exact name) along with some low level aloe. If you kill the aloes first, you can kill those trees with symbol of wrath and some other smiting skills and get a fair amount of experience.
Riverside offers level 18 white mantle mobs. A level 18 monk could solo them with the right build (healing, PBAoE smiting, etc.) and get a lot of experience from them.
There are Hill Giants in riverside and sanctum cay, that offer decent drops but knocks you down randomly. You need to time your spells correctly or you will be interrupted. Giant farming used to be really popular because they had a high rare armor drop rate. However, that is not the case anymore but they are still good for experience for non-ascended people.
Flesh golems in pediment rock, my personal favorite, are also fairly easy to deal with. Just make sure you can kill them before they use lingering curse on you and everything's set. Also in pediment rock are these annoy hydras that can kill your level 20 monk in seconds, and they travel in groups. If for some reason you want to fight them instead of the easy golems, take protective spirit and equip super runes all-around. You will be able to heal yourself faster than the rate of damage being applied to you. It's not all that efficient but it's fun to watch yourself being nearly invinsible against the level 24 monsters.

My monk character has three smiting skills, three healing skills (including a resurrect), and two protection skills, which pretty much corresponds with the balance I've given it in terms of attributes. Jack of all trades, expert in none, but that makes it OK to use in almost any situation. It can do a decent amount of ranged damage with some moderately powerful smiting spells, heal a decent amount if not relied on too much, and it has a couple of protection spells to throw into the mix for good measure. This balance has allowed it to level up just as quickly, if not slightly quicker, than my main Ranger/Monk character. Plus, finding a pretty good holy wand thing early on helped . Whether it would be of use in PvP is debatable, but I don't have any intention of bothering much with PvP at the moment anyway.
I haven't bothered much with the secondary profession (Elementalist) on that one, though. But it's not my main character so I'm not too bothered; I won't be using it in a dedicated manner, and I can always re-allocate the points if necessary.

I disagree. Smiting Monk build: Mo/Ele or Me
Meteor Shower/Firestorm, and/or Chaos Storm, Balthazar's, Retribution, Bane Signet, Breeze, Smite Hex, Dwana's kiss
12 Divine Favor
11 Smite
8 (healing, protect fire, or domination magic just depends on what you want)
You can call down the Thunder with that! If you want better armor just use protection prayer instead of healing. Smiting monks are insanely powerful.

Matt you are on the right track. When you have to go fight your mirror as a monk, many monk players complain because all they have done is specialized in healing and now they have to kill and they don't know how to do that. That's how I was until someone explained this truth to me: there is more to being a monk than a Heal-Bot
They have only explored 1/8th of what their character is capable of. GW is about versatility an adaptability. If anyone thinks of a monk as just a Heal-Bot you will NEVER beat this game.
